Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

If you’re experiencing leg cramps or pain when walking and exercising, the cause may be peripheral artery disease (PAD). When it comes to PAD, there are treatments available to relieve your pain.

PAD happens when the arteries to the legs are blocked, resulting in poor circulation and pain in legs. A common symptom of PAD is pain in the legs or calves when walking or exercising. While resting, the pain usually goes away.

PAD treatments

To treat PAD, you have a number of options:

  • Lifestyle changes—physical activity, a healthier diet, quitting smoking
  • Medications—lower blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Minimally invasive surgical procedures—atherectomy and light-guided catheters clean out arteries
  • Balloon and stent—used to treat blockages in arteries

In some cases, our vascular surgeons can perform a minimally invasive procedure to open the blocked artery and improve circulation.
